Our Diet Part 2

It has been over a year since we decided to change the foods we eat. Last November I blogged about discovering the diet at the Bulletproof Executive.  I found the diet while researching what I should eat after realizing I had a problem with consuming too many carbohydrates, mostly in the form of wheat and sugar. During the past year I have learned a lot about nutrition and how the body works. I read about the popular Paleo/Primal Diets and the information the Weston A. Price Foundation publishes. From what I have learned I am happy I found the Bulletproof Executive first.  I think the general awareness of nutrition the Paleo world promotes is great, but Bulletproof takes it to another level with knowledge about proper cooking methods and avoiding foods that usually are high in mycotoxins.

For the first time in my life I look forward to and enjoy the foods I prepare. I enjoy the Costa Rican grass-fed beef, especially the fat and marrow. The meals leave me feeling satisfied and energized.  We are very fortunate to live where we do and have abundant supplies of grass-fed beef and butter available everywhere. I don’t miss eating sugar, gluten, legumes and processed/packaged foods. I feel my overall health has improved, I am able to think better and my energy is more stable. Hopefully I am moving in the direction to have a healthy rest of my life.

A big part of the Bulletproof Diet is drinking coffee with butter and MCT oil for breakfast. From what I have read, this recipe works best if the coffee beans are mycotoxin free. Bulletproof Executive sells a propriety brand of mycotoxin free coffee beans but the cost of sending/importing them here is out of the question for us. During this past year, I learned that I am sensitive to mycotoxins in my food and found out that I wasn’t able to tolerate any of the coffee beans we can buy here so I gave up caffeine entirely. While I really enjoyed the energy buttered coffee gave me, the downsides were too great for me.

The Bulletproof Executive includes a lot more than what foods to eat. It touches on every aspect of being human and how to get the best performance possible. Something they recommend is to drink salt water before getting out of bed to help support the adrenal glands with the tremendous job they must perform changing the blood pressure after being horizontal for hours on end. I read a comment on the forum where a person said they would give up their Bulletproof coffee before giving up salt water before rising. One complaint I have had since giving up caffeine was how long it took me to feel “normal” in the morning. I had even considered reintroducing tea to my diet, but wanted to give the salt water trick a try first.

I got a bottle that I could drink out of while laying in bed and mixed the salt water solution.  I drank it and waited about 10 minutes before getting out of bed. I was very surprised at the result after the first try. I got up and felt energized, like I had drunk some caffeine. I felt great the entire day. I thought this must be too good to be true but it isn’t. After a few mornings of salt water and me raving about the effects, John tried it. We are now both hooked and amazed at the impact of something so simple.  I no longer feel the need to reintroduce caffeine to my diet.

I feel the dietary changes have been great for our overall health and well being. I would recommend the Bulletproof Diet and lifestyle for anyone. The photos in this post are some of the meals I prepare for us. The first is beef (I switch between using ground and thinly sliced tenderloin) with vegetables and herbs, cooked in bone broth with lots of ghee added after the beef and veggies are cooked. The second is braised beef with vegetables. The gravy is made with cassava flour. The last picture is liver burger (liver mixed with ground beef) on a bed of arugula with hollandaise sauce. The vegetables are topped with some of the steamed vegetables blended with ghee and salt.

Your meals look delicious! I believe you qualify as the Bullet Proof Martha Stewart of Costa Rica. I am impressed with your commitment to healthy eating. So happy you are reaping the benefits.

Hello Sally, Thanks for introducing me to the bulletproof diet. I love my coffee! I'm excited to try it their way. I haven't tried the salt water morning yet but I will. On one of the podcasts they talk about curcumin which I use in Golden Milk. It seems to be the best way for me. Here's a video link: http://youtu.be/jYCQb2YNGt4
I make it with soy, coconut milk and oil and honey since I don't use cow milk. It's very good! Surprisingly. :D

Hi Blufli - I'm happy to hear you are finding some useful inspirations with the bulletproof diet. Thanks for the link to the video. Turmeric is truly an amazing anti-inflammatory medicine. We are growing some here which should be ready for daily consumption next year.
