An adventure up the Rio Viejo to the Waterfall

New path on the short cut trail to the river.

On December 22nd, I hiked up river to the waterfall. Last rainy season, part of the short cut trail to the river slid away. Fortunately, it was possible to make a new trail over the slide. Smiley came with me and I was hoping Copanita would stay home, but she sensed we were going on an adventure and found us.

I was surprised I could navigate the river in my boots up until the orange spring. There was no way around getting my feet wet at that part. I figured I made it this far that I should just get my feet wet and continue to the waterfall.

It's always interesting to see how much the river changes year over year. Enormous boulders move making new ways to criss-cross the river. I noticed a stretch of the river, that in the past had white rock pools, is still covered in sand and rocks. You would never know the beauty underneath it all.

The waterfall was flowing more than I expected for this time of year. The swimming pool that used to be at the base of the fall is still filled completely up. The water was only about one foot deep in front of the fall.

Everything is so lush, green and beautiful. The water is clear and inviting. The dogs had a blast playing with each other and occasionally annoying me as I tried to take a picture. I didn't take the tripod with me so these photos aren't artist or of the best quality. They are more to document how the river looked at the end of 2023.
