Living in Puriscal, Costa Rica, means embracing the unexpected joys of rural life—like encounters with adventurous local wildlife. This story of a stray German Shepherd reminds me why this community is so special.
Over the years, I've learned there are dogs in the Puriscal area that love to "joy-ride." Some crave freedom and seize it at every opportunity. For these pups, that often means splashing in the river, hunting critters, and going wild over any creature they spot.
I first noticed this German Shepherd in our local river, always at a distance. She'd bolt whenever she saw me and my dog, Smiley, who made it her mission to chase her off. This went on for about a month. Then, perhaps tired of river life, the skinny Shepherd decided to befriend us. Unfortunately, Smiley wasn't having it—she guarded me fiercely and said a firm "no" to any help.
I tried explaining to Smiley that this dog was in need, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. Eventually, the Shepherd followed us home and discovered the neighborhood above the river. She did her best to worm her way into our lives, but Smiley stood her ground.
In the end, I learned a kind Tico neighbor up the street had taken her in and was finding her a forever home. It's heartwarming to know there are compassionate souls in Puriscal!
