Nature’s Gifts in Puriscal’s Backyard

Wild flowers in the garden.

In my long garden bed in Puriscal, I alternate between food and flowers, letting nature surprise me. This season, self-seeded Mexican sunflowers, zinnias, and cosmos have painted the bed with vibrant hues. Their wild beauty inspires my photography, each frame a celebration of color and spontaneity in my Costa Rican backyard.

Scattered across the property, a few clumps of sugar cane stand tall, their slender stalks swaying gently. Do you recognize this plant? Its subtle charm adds a rustic touch to the landscape, a quiet reminder of Puriscal’s agricultural roots, captured through my lens as I explore the land.

Near the barn, a healthy guanábana tree, also known as soursop, thrives, its spiky fruit promising tropical delight. Sadly, an insect pest stunts the fruit’s growth, and the largest we’ve seen was just a few inches long, as shown in this photo. I avoid insecticides, choosing nature’s course over a harvest, a decision that shapes our life here.
