Rivers and Legends of Puriscal’s Paradise

Water fall over rock formation.
Rio Viejo Waterfall

Our property in Puriscal is cradled by rivers that weave through the land, ever-changing with the seasons. In February’s dry season, this waterfall, marking one of our borders, still flows with surprising vigor. Its cascade, framed by lush greenery, is a favorite subject for my photography, capturing the timeless beauty of our slice of paradise.

Rio Viejo Gorge

To the left of the waterfall lies a striking gorge, its shallow riverbed exposed in the dry season, as seen in this photo. Once a deep, popular swimming spot in years past, the now-visible rocks tell a story of nature’s ebb and flow. The scene’s rugged beauty inspires my lens to document the land’s quiet transformations.

Rio Viejo Bat Cave

Tucked in Rio Viejo, the famous bat cave holds whispers of history. Step inside, and piles of bat guano greet you, a sign of its lively inhabitants. Local tales recount how this cave sheltered people during Costa Rica’s 1948 civil war, adding a layer of intrigue to its shadowy depths, perfectly captured in this photograph.
