Ant Wonder

ant nest waste
I saw this small ant wonder as I was collecting fallen orchid flowers on the ground. Ants were carrying pieces of waste out of a small hole in the earth and placing them in this strange formation attached to a rock. I marveled at how they intentionally placed each piece. Nothing was random or just thrown into a pile. The structure was about three inches long and about one inch thick.

Ants are great engineers. They can have mile-long networks underground. They are also quite methodical as evidenced in your photo. Such fun to watch.
