Hylocereus Costaricensis

dragon fruit

dragon fruit
This cactus grows wild all over the property. I have heard about the fragrant night blooming flowers but haven't seen any. Recently, I was at the river and found a fruit on the cactus. I am not 100% certain I have the correct name for this cactus. I read on the internet there are many different types. I didn't realize it at the time, but the fruit is edible. It's called pitahaya or dragon fruit. I looked for the fruit the next day but it was gone.

Just a gorgeous color and fruit. Animals beat you to it! They did with our apples the first year we had fruit. I waited until the next day, but it was too late.
The deer got to it first.

The red sure stuck out among all the green. It seems the animals know what is good to eat and usually keep a better eye on it than the humans do.
