About two months ago I wrote about a Wandering Spider in the garden. The leaf she attached a large egg sack to fell to the ground so I covered it with a basket. I intervened because the plant she chose was dyeing. The basket had a hole in it and from time to time I would peek inside. She had attached the egg sac to the underside of the basket. The last time I looked through the hole was with the camera. I could tell something had happened and needed further investigation.

The habitat I made for the spider would also be a good hiding place for a snake. I took a long stick and lifted the basket up. There were no snakes so I moved closer in and found a hollowed out egg sack and hundreds of tiny molted spider bodies. Mama spider wasn't there and none of the babies were there. Everyone took off for their next journey in life. These spiders are nocturnal so I probably won't be seeing many.

A new spider appeared in the barn. She made a large web in an area I don't frequently walk through. I warned John about it several times so he didn't encounter the web by accident. The web got so big I decided it should be removed and I broke it up with a stick. The spider didn't try to rebuild which I thought was a little odd. A few days later I saw her enormous web in a much better location. It's still under cover of the roof of the barn, but in an area we do not walk through.

She is a type of Nephila or Golden Orb-weaver spider. A very small male is already with her in the web. Golden Orb spiders are common here. The females get very large. The body on this one is more than an inch, add several more inches for the legs. I have seen extremely large web clusters of these spiders. I will monitor this one and will not let it get out of hand.
