Subtle Beauties found in Puriscal

Madero Negro Flowers

The tropics are stunningly beautiful and so exotic compared to my old home town in the Pacific Northwest. When we first toured this property the real estate agent commented on how lovely the flowering trees were in the dry season.

We moved onto the property in October, the height of the rainy season. I was looking forward to seeing the trees in action when the seasons changed. I had only seen photos of the flowering trees and didn't know what to expect. Would it be like the colorful fall leaves in North America, or something else?

The dry season arrived and our property revealed a sprinkling of flowering trees in many different places. Often there would be a super showy tree all by itself. In other areas a cluster of trees bloomed.

I learned that some trees flower faithfully every year and others did not. Some trees blossom every other year or even every five years. Other trees bloom depending on the amount of rain received after a dry spell.

Animals and birds of all types eat the flowers. Soon, the flowers will produce seeds for the wind to disperse and the cycle begins again. Costa Rica and photography has taught me to look for the subtle beauties, they are everywhere!
