Long Garden Bed Update

The long garden was recently rejuvenated and planted with corn. This is the third time growing corn in this area. Prior to this planting I let the wildflowers, mostly cosmos, and volunteer squash plants take over.

I planted corn seeds that were left over from last time and none of them germinated. The store I bought seeds from in the past didn't have any corn seeds. I remembered a dry ear of corn I put in the freezer many years ago and ended up planting those seeds. I planted hundreds of seeds and only about twenty plants germinated. That should be plenty to get a small crop and I will be sure to save seeds for the next planting.

In preparing the long garden bed a large amount of composted chicken manure was worked into the soil. Many volunteers came from the compost including tomatoes, amaranth and flowers.

The chaoyte vines are producing now, however most of the squash have worms. Luckily the chickens don't seem to mind.
